Een ontmoeting met Prins Charles, koning Lodewijk XIV, koning-stadhouder Willem III en keizerin Joséphine Bonaparte: Tijdens Vorstelijk tuinieren maakt u een wandeling door de belangrijkste koninklijke tuinen van de afgelopen 400 jaar. De tentoongestelde originele aquarellen van Highgrove Florilegium – een prestigieus boek met bloemportretten uit de tuin van de Britse kroonprins- vormen het hoogtepunt. Nooit eerder waren deze botanische tekeningen van de prinselijke residentie Highgrove in Nederland te zien.
De tentoonstelling Vorstelijk tuinieren loopt van 30 januari t/m 9 mei 2010 in Teylers Museum.
Gisteren ging ik naar Kazagurama de kleine Japans/Koreaanse supermarkt in Rotterdam voor mijn eerste zelfgemaakte stuk patisserie ever, een matcha (groene thee) cake met rode azuki bonen.

Gordon Brown’s efforts to distance himself from a culture of viciousbriefing by his inner circle were derailed yesterday when three former Blairite ministers claimed they had been victims of sustained slander, and joined the Tories in calling for a shakeup of Downing Street.
Number 10 said yesterday that the prime minister was furious with his former political aide Damian MacBride for sending an email setting out how leading Conservatives including David Cameron and the wife of George Osborne, the shadow chancellor, could be smeared.
Derek Draper, the Labour adviser who was corresponding with McBride over suggestions about how to smear leading Tories, said he was considering quitting his post on the website Labourlist.
Frank Field, a former welfare minister, said the party was staring into the abyss. “Harold Wilson asserted that the Labour party was a moral crusade or it was nothing. The McBride affair has left Labour members looking at nothing. That is the reality check that McBride has wrought on the party.
“There are two sides to the prime minister’s character – there is this very civilised, generous, informed side, and there is this other side which is about controlling people.”
Matthew Taylor, the former director of strategy at Number 10, said he was “the subject of a nasty smearallegedly circulated by Damian McBride”. Writing on his blog, he added: “I’m not sure whether Brown’s bad side is that much worse than anyone else’s but it feels so because of his carefully cultivated image as a man of unblemished high-mindedness.”
The energy and climate change secretary, Ed Miliband, defended Brown, saying the prime minister did not have a “dark side” and that he “came into politics for the right reason”. Miliband added: “He’s not someone who thinks that the politics of innuendo is how you win elections.”

“At a friend’s sleepover more than a year ago, 14-year-old Phillip Swartley pocketed change from unlocked vehicles in the neighborhood to buy chips and soft drinks. The cops caught him.
There was no need for an attorney, said Phillip’s mother, Amy Swartley, who thought at most, the judge would slap her son with a fine or community service.
But she was shocked to find her eighth-grader handcuffed and shackled in the courtroom and sentenced to a youth detention center. Then, he was shipped to a boarding school for troubled teens for nine months.”
“The county has been rocked by a kickback scandal involving two elected judges who essentially jailed kids for cash. Many of the children had appeared before judges without a lawyer.
The nonprofit Juvenile Law Center in Philadelphia said Phillip is one of at least 5,000 children over the past five years who appeared before former Luzerne County President Judge Mark Ciavarella.
Ciavarella pleaded guilty earlier this month to federal criminal charges of fraud and other tax charges, according to the U.S. attorney’s office. Former Luzerne County Senior Judge Michael Conahan also pleaded guilty to the same charges. The two secretly received more than $2.6 million, prosecutors said.”
“Ciavarella, 58, along with Conahan, 56, corruptly and fraudulently “created the potential for an increased number of juvenile offenders to be sent to juvenile detention facilities,” federal court documents alleged. Children would be placed in private detention centers, under contract with the court, to increase the head count. In exchange, the two judges would receive kickbacks.
“Minors charged with nonviolent crimes were often given harsher sentences than what probation officers recommended, court documents say. Other investigators say the trials lasted a few minutes at most.
“The corruption began in 2002, when Conahan shut down the state juvenile detention center and used money from the Luzerne County budget to fund a multimillion-dollar lease for the private facilities. Despite some raised eyebrows from the community, county commissioners approved the deal.
“Critics say private prisons lack transparency because they don’t go through the same inspections and audits as a state facility, and this may have allowed payoffs to go so long without being noticed.
“Once somebody is going to make more money by holding more kids, there is a pretty good predictable profit motive,” said criminal justice consultant Judith Greene, who heads a nonprofit group called Justice Strategies. “It’s predictable that companies are going to tolerate certain behaviors they shouldn’t.”
“After being sent to boarding school, Phillip, now 15, became withdrawn and depressed, his mother says.”
He has one of the highest scores on the CITO test, the important school test for kids in the Netherlands. He’s called Mohammed Darwish. The CITO test is a recommendation for your future education.
He says: “I hope that I’ll be the first student from my elementary school As-siddieq who will go to Barlaeus college prep school (grammar school). It’s a modern school, where bullying is severly punished. And the kids there are nice. ”
Obviously a kid like Mohammed shouldn’t go to a “prep middle level vocational school”!*

Met de gevarieerde selectie van sprekers pogen wij een groot aantal verschillende praktijken te tonen en inzichtelijk te maken, en de veelal hybride rol van ‘de curator’ te problematiseren.

Toen ik mijn reeks van Petit Paradis tekeningen begon was mijn idee om een tekening te maken elke dag, met de spullen om me heen als inspiratiebron, mijn kleren, dingen in mijn kamer. Ik ben voor enige tijd elke dag een tekening blijven maken, als een visueel dagboek. Sinds een paar jaar begon het bloggen het tekenen langzaam te overtreffen, nu doe ik bijna een post per dag. (Bij het begin van mijn tekening project was ik niet eens overal aangemeld en blogs waren nog onder de naam weblogs)
Daarom was ik verheugd om een kunstenaar te zien uit de 18de-eeuw die al een visueel dagboek had, door het maken van tekeningen van het werkelijke leven dat hem omringde. Christiaan Andriessen (1775-1846) woonde in Amsterdam met zijn familie, werkzaam als docent aan de Academie. In zijn dagelijkse schetsen geeft hij intieme impressies van het eenvoudige huiselijk leven van zijn familie, de kermis der ijdelheid op de straten, de salon concerten, tonen een glimp van dingen die je nooit ziet in klassieke 18de-eeuwse kunst van vermythologiseerde tablaux-vivants.
Een ander ding dat opvalt in zijn tekeningen is het ontbreken van een moralistische of didactische agenda. Ik denk dat hij die bewaard heeft voor zijn baan als leraar. Er wordt veel gegluurd door ramen (en door een camera obscura ) en er is een vreemde, bijna komische scène waar de vermeende verkrachting van een van de dienstmeiden wordt nagespeeld, (une liaison dangereuse?) alle standaard onderwerpen voor die eeuw van verlichting en frivoliteit, maar het heeft niets van William Hogarth’s satire of zelfs geestigheid. Hij staat dichter bij Samuel Pepys geschreven dagboek.
In het kleine handschrift dat onder het merendeel van de tekeningen gekrabbeld is, schrijft Andriessen gewoon beschrijvingen van wat er aan de hand is, maar soms zijn er ook stukjes dialoog , die bijdragen aan de levendigheid van de scènes. Maar hij maakt ook goed gebruik van zijn tekenvaardigheden met behulp van claire obscure om dramatische effecten te krijgen (een dichte mist door de straten lijkt bijna voorbode van een Rene Daniels schilderij)
Niet een van de officiële Andriessen schilderijen heeft het overleefd en volgens sommige van de voorlopige schetsen die hij maakte, lijkt dit niet een groot verlies. De modellen die hij gebruikte voor hen zijn echter wel bewaard gebleven, want zij zijn de protagonisten van veel van zijn schetsen, waarop de zelden geziene momenten in het leven van de naakte ambtenaren van die dag.
Voor drie jaar, tussen 1805-1808, Christiaan hield zich aan een tekening per dag. Er lijkt weinig voortzetting vanaf 1806, wanneer er slechts een paar tekeningen per jaar zijn, maar misschien heeft de rest het gewoon niet overleefd. Een ruime selectie van de tekeningen worden nu tentoongesteld op de website ‘Amsterdam Stadsarchief, maar beter nog is er de verbazingwekkende Christiaan Andriessen databank , met alle schetsen digitaal weergegeven.
Dus eindelijk kan Christiaan Andriessens worden gezien als de blog die het had kunnen zijn!

Wash the strawberries and powder them with sugar.
Dredge the strawberries with the balsamico vinegar and let them rest for an hour.
Sprinkle some pink pepper over it.
Trim it off with fresh mint.

“A novel concerning the life of a young man who is by his education and life unknown with the fact that he is homosexual ! Michel Verbeek is the son of a grocer in Utrecht. In the pious environment that his parents conservatively keep in score, he can not develop himself. But suddenly there is a reason to break free, when his mother wants him to get married. Michel looks for his recreation in the cellars where youth goes wild, there he meets Marion, a voluptuously world-wise depraved child, who provides herself an income from the trade in narcotic substances.
“Marion wants to go to bed with Michel, but this becomes for a both disenchantment. Marion understands, yet Michel does not see the signs of his different nature!! He gets into a financial mess, pinches from the fund of his parents and finally sees only a expedient in a marriage with Maria, the girl slid forward by his mother. He marries, but already rapidly notices that he has an aversion of the sexually-aggressive Maria. If he hears that she expects a child he gets a heavy shock, the repeated sexual aggresiveness of Maria, who is in her pregnancy more violent on him then ever, ricochets him and after a violent scene he leaves the house.
“A new meeting with Marion brings him on the wrong path, but not for long, because he is seized by the police force. Of Marion he has learned, that he is homosexual, in the prison he reaches repentance and realises that she is right. Fate intervenes when he gets fired from his job in Breda. He gets an accident, becomes collided on the motorway and the man who does this , proves to be the man, that awakes his love: Charles Brummelkamp, great-industrial, married, father of two children. Drama enters the lives of both these men and Ida, Charles’ wife does not realise, that her husband has an affair with Michel, of whom she becomes amorous. Brummelkamp suffers from being “different”, but he cannot tear himself loose from Michel.
Then a range of pursuits, anonymous letters, mysterious phone calls follows. Finally the end comes in a splendid climax, in which Charles commits suicide and the offender of the mental blackmail does not escape his rightly sentence .

Valentijn knew from the age of 3 that he wanted to be a girl. A son of very open-minded and liberal parents Valentijn is followed in this documentary from 2007 by Hetty Nietsch until he is 17 years and taking female hormones (he already had taken medicine to postpone the normal male development of his body).
You see him cheering when he gets his first Barbie doll and later a sewing-machine for his birthday (“When the light is off that means the battery is flat!” he tells his younger brother), his failed attempt to study at the ballet school to become a ballerina (school-regulations only allow boys to become male dancers). A higly intelligent and strong-willed boy who seems well able to tell off bully classmates later at the new high-school, rather than let it trouble him and ruin his days at school. First only on family holidays in Spain and Italy is he allowed by his parents to wear girls clothes, later he wears them also to high-school.
I especially like the first minutes when some boys from his elementary-school are asked about their strange classmate. “And have you ever bullied him?” to which one boy lifts up his hand then quickly comes to his senses, adding “Oh no no never…never!”

Last weekend I had a small presentation in the hallway of studio-complex De Verzonnen Stip in Rotterdam, a mural depicting a cute fire hose, and some hot asses…
Gisteren kocht ik dit boek over de Israëlische fotograaf Michal Chelbin iemand van wie ik nooit eerder had gehoord, maar waarvan de portretten van het circus folk uit Rusland, Israël, Engeland en de Oekraïne, me meteen deden denken aan de kinderen uit Petersburg op de foto’s van van Evgeny Mokhorev . Hetzelfde gevoel van griezelige onschuld die afkomstig is van deze kinderen die keihard moeten werken als acrobaten, slangenmensen, atlethen en elke dag de wereld rond reizen. Ze worden gefotografeerd in poses thuis of op de weg – zoals in Mokhorev’s foto’s, zijn ze een vorm van sociale documentaire, fictieve non-fictie.

Here are some vintage photographs with wonderful cut-out pre-photoshop designs from orientalist Steve Chasmar‘s opium-drenched papermoon Flickr-page. Chasmar bought them at a studio in the town of Pyay, Myanmar (Burma) in 1999. The Burmese script across the top of the last pic reads “Off to the front”.

a beautiful series of photographs of mostly old people portrait in their homes in bulgaria, france, spain, the netherlands and other countries.
most of the people are simple farmer folk in sparse interiors: a plastic tablecloth, buckets, domestic tools, sausages hanging from the ceiling, almost no pictures, electric devises.
apart from a shrinking body these pictures makes getting old something to look forward to rather than to fear.
I could well imagine myself living like that in old age between colours and patterns of my liking
after a 1000 year marriage you coordinate the colours of eachothers outfits without effort
some of these domestic landscapesmay be too dark or sparse (or creepy) but still preferable to the standard pre-fab appartments for the old where they may put you away.

“One of the animations, entitled Namakura Katana (An Obtuse Sword), is believed to be the oldest Japanese animation film still in existence. A comedy, the film relates the story of a samurai warrior who is tricked into buying a dull-edged sword. He tries to attack passers-by so as to examine the sword, but lower-class townspeople fight back and knock him down.
The other film – Urashima Taro, which premiered in 1918 – depicts a famous Japanese folk tale about a fisherman who is invited to an underwater castle after saving a sea turtle on a beach.”

Uncle Kashimoto used to be a famous sumo wrestler. Then he married a young and pretty enka singer, and she introduced him to the Atkins diet. Two years later, this is what he looked like…
I met Danny in the summer of 2002 through the early days of my internet connection. At our first meeting I gave him a pirate eye-patch. At the end of the day he fell asleep in my arms. He already wanted to be a fashion designer then.
he told me once how he bought an ice-cream cone and set about on a bench in the park to enjoy it when he noticed behind him a large building crane looming dangerously close. He then decided to move to a bench somewhat farther down to eat his icecream in peace.
I think he was the closest a human being could get to the image presented in my drawings beside myself.
I just found out he is one of the graduates of the Academy of Fine Arts in Arnhem to be selected for a big Couture Award.
In 2003 he sent me a picture of a baby blackbird that he had taken pity on. Apparently the poor thing had fallen from its nest. It died after two days of Danny’s pity.
